History of the Site

The story behind the property is what truly separates St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino from other casino resorts in Canada. The main Mission building - a red-brick structure you see in almost every photo of the resort - once operated as an Indian Residential School. It was open from 1912 through 1970, and children from Ktunaxa, Shuswap and other First Nations attended there under Catholic Church administration. After the school closed, the building remained empty for several decades.

In time, the Ktunaxa Nation Council, the Shuswap Indian Band and Samson Cree Nation chose to redevelop the site as a Native-owned resort and casino project. Work on that vision began around 2000, and the golf course opened in 2001. The property is owned by the Ktunaxa Nation through SEM Resort Limited Partnership. Leaders in the Ktunaxa community have described the decision to turn the school into a resort as both an economic move and a form of cultural reclamation, taking a place marked by historical trauma and reshaping it into a source of revenue and presence for the community.

That history is not treated as a minor detail for guests. The restored Mission building is the physical center of the resort, but also its symbolic one. For a lot of visitors, the knowledge of what the building used to be changes how the entire stay feels.
